Forest site characterisation

The Forest Site Characterisation service provides facts on the status and condition of predefined forest components, such as: forest extension, stand delineation, forest infrastructures, main forest types, stand variables (i.e: dominant height, stand age, stand density), forest disturbances (clear cuts, fire scars), topography (DEM, slope, aspect).

Service ID: FoCh.
Provider: FORA, GMV, MADERA+.
Service category: Added value.
Service subcategory Mapping / Feature Extraction.
Service keywords: Forest, Monitor Forest Resources, Forest Type.
Input data: Medium resolution optical satellite images (Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3, Landsat), high resolution satellite images, very high resolution satellite images, airborne optical, LIDAR.
Delivery format: Raster and vector layers.
Delivery support: Platform.
Service spatial resolution: Scale 1:5,000 – 1:50,000.
Service frequency: Once for description of the forest topography. For other forest characteristics, the delivery frequency could range from six-months to two years.

Wood Characterisation

The Wood Characterisation service consists of modelling and mapping wood fibre attributes linked to the wood product potential and performance (i.e. pulp yield, density, strength and stiffness of lumber). Data handled by the wood characterisation models are: remote sensing (LIDAR) data, environmental parameters and timber attributes field measurements. Thereafter, wood characteristics are extrapolated to larger forest areas.
